 Why do I do it? Or who am I? What am I? Twitter and 

 social media as poetry? Or is it chess? Content as art.

 I don't like the words fallibilism or critical 

 rationalism, so I just think of it as a series of principles.

 Physical beauty in another human can signal a promise for your genes.

 So in that sense, it does reflect health, because 

 your genes want to propagate with high probability.

 Maybe the book that I recommend the most to people in earnest is this 100 page

 Philosophy in the Real World, An Introduction to Karl Popper by Brian

 McGee. I want to read it here and offer some comments along the way.

 As many of you are saying, trust in science 

 or trust in the scientific method is misplaced.

 It's the wrong lens to look at the entire process through.

 Even saying relying upon science isn't quite correct.

 theory about what's going on in a particular case,

 in a particular scientific discipline, among particular researchers.

 And I think this is what Logan is hinting at 

 there with the outsourcing of scientific explanation.

 We need an explanation of how the explanations are being generated.

 And sometimes in certain disciplines there appears to be an opacity,

 a difficulty in seeing what's really going on,

 how exactly the error correcting mechanism is working. And that's a red flag.

 Yeah, Arjun, to answer your question, when an idea or ideology or philosophy is latent

 with moralistic language, that can be a great barrier to error correction because those

 who espouse said ideas presume that they're morally superior to those who disagree with

 them, or at least that can be the case, it doesn't necessarily have to.

 off and you, without having knowledge of economics, advocate for a minimum wage.

 You might therefore assume that anyone who disagrees with you about implementing a coercive

 minimum wage law just doesn't care about 

 poor people, and so you see the world in a kind

 of Manichean way, in which there are good guys who advocate for policies such as minimum

 wage and bad guys. The only reason that such bad guys 

 would disagree with you is because they don't care about

 poor people like you do. In other words, it's a moralistic ideology.

 And something similar could be happening with altruism and altruists in general, or effective

 altruists, namely people who disagree with them, they don't care so it goes as much about

 other people, and so they can't possibly disagree in good faith.

 And so moralizing in general, again, given the current kind of memeplex that's out there,

 really prevents error correction. Because again, you're always 

 just assuming—you presume the moral high ground before listening

 to opponents' arguments, whereas really, moralizing, if anything, should come after our deepest

 understanding of the ideas at hand. And even then, when the 

 ideas receive criticism, there's no sense in moralizing against such

 criticisms of something along the lines of, only morally inferior people would ever offer

 such ideas. We always have to just take ideas as they 

 come and analyze them with our best criticisms at hand.

 Superintelligence was written by Nick Bostrom in 2014. It's been almost a

 decade now since that book was published. It was published two years after an

 article written by David Deutsch that I'll put in the next chit published in

 Aon magazine titled Creative Blocks. That was in 2012 by David Deutsch and it was

 about the possibility of artificial general intelligence. David Deutsch had

 written The Beginning of Infinity some years before this. Developing work began

 by Karl Popper on conjectural knowledge. Epistemology, the explanation of how

 knowledge can be created, what entities can create knowledge and this led David

 Deutsch to the important conclusion that people, a special case of which is the

 human being, another special case of which is the artificial general

 intelligence or alien life, all of these things have in common the capacity to

 explain the world. In other words the capacity to create knowledge. This means

 that people and what a person is is intimately tied to epistemology and what

 knowledge can be created and how it can possibly be created is constrained by an

 understanding of epistemology. It's self-constrained by what it is possible

 to compute because understanding what brains do is a kind of computation. And

 so I read superintelligence and was struck by a number of things so much so

 that one of the first articles I produced on my website is this one right

 here which was a critique of the book superintelligence.

 Today I'm going to explain how to fall asleep effortlessly without needing drugs, alcohol, or supplements.

 Paradise is a garden with a view within walking distance to a cafe.

 Critical thinking. When you think about the word critical and what it means alone,

 kind of sounds like an emergency or something, you know? It's like, it's critical, it's urgent,

 it's like dire, you know? So what does that mean in context? It's like critical thinking,

 you know? I was just kind of thinking about 

 that and I was like, man, when you think about it,

 I feel like the best critical thinking is when you're trying to poke holes in something

 and find its critical weaknesses, you know? Its points of vulnerability.

 And not just vulnerability, but also like, I don't know, like you're getting as deep into

 something as you can, you know? Like, its critical elements. Like when you think about

 the foundation of a structure, like the most critical supporting beams that keep a building

 standing, like those are its most critical elements, its foundation, you know? So it's like

 critical in two types of ways, and they 

 overlap a bit, but it's just kind of interesting. And

 I think that the best critical thinkers kind 

 of tell us what we don't want to hear sometimes,

 but I think the most enjoyable ones are the people who can maintain optimism. Like,

 they can maintain this superposition of critical thinking and optimism at the same time. So that

 way you're doing the critical thinking with 

 end goal in mind, with a goal of evolution or

 improvement or exciting new idea, rather than just demeaning it and destroying it, dismantling it,

 and just being negative, you know? Because it's 

 easy to try and destroy something, but it's much

 harder to, you know, patch the problem that 

 just pointed out, the hole you just poked with

 your criticism, you know? So maintaining that superposition and not being too optimistic or

 too critical, you know? More like switching back and forth 

 as much as possible and cycling between them. It's important.

 In my experience, if you're willing to put in 

 the hours, there's no such thing as too ambitious.

 It might be too ambitious to hit all of 

 goals tomorrow, but if it's a few years out,

 and you're willing to grind every day and make it your obsession,

 then be as ambitious as you can possibly tolerate.

 What is it in ourselves that we should prize? Not just

 transpiration, even plants do that, or respiration, even beasts and wild animals 

 breathe, or being struck by passing thoughts, or jerked like a puppet by your own

 impulses, or moving in herds, or eating and relieving yourself afterwards.

 Then, what is to be prized? An audience 

 No, no more than the clackling of their tongues,

 which is all that public praise amounts to, a clackling of tongues.

 So we throw out other people's recognition. What's left for us to prize?

 I think it's this, to do and not do what we were designed for.

 That's the goal of all trades, all arts, what each of them aims at,

 that the thing they create should do what it was designed to 

 do. The nurserymen who cares for the vines, the horse trainer,

 the dog breeder, this is what they aim at. And 

 and education, what else are they trying to accomplish?

 So that's what we should prize. Hold on to that, 

 and you won't be tempered to aim at anything else.

 And if you can't stop prizing a lot of other 

 things, then you'll never be free. Free, independent,

 imperturbable, because you'll always be envious and jealous, afraid that 

 might come and take it all away from you, plotting against those who have them.

 Those things you prize. People who need those things are bound 

 to be a mess and bound to take out their frustrations on the gods.

 Whereas to respect your own mind, to prize 

 will leave you satisfied with your own self,

 well integrated into your community and in tune with the 

 as well, embracing what they allot you and what they ordain.

 secrets or principles to how I learn languages.

 And I wanted to do this because I've gotten some pretty helpful insights from other people

 on this app. So here's just a quick primer on a topic which I 

 struggled with for years and finally sort of cracked the code on.

 Another interesting thing to call back is how

 how software and technology basically is created to make certain memes more durable and scalable.

 So back when vlogging was just getting introduced you 

 needed to be highly technically proficient and creative

 and have the desire to film yourself and be able to do all 

 the exporting and all the technical elements that come with it

 and now, I mean, it's weird if you don't post videos 

 and photos of yourself online to share with the world.

 That is like the standard. Obviously not necessarily in the 

 form of vlogs but in the form of other kinds of social media.

 So it's just interesting to think about how that 

 transition might happen to audio and to things like podcasting

 and I guess AirChat or ChitChat is the very lightweight version of sharing your thoughts vocally

 and in an audio format that people can interface with and 

 understand with very low touch and almost no technical proficiency required.

 For someone like me who likes to take a lot 

 pictures, AirChad is great because even though

 Instagram is a platform dedicated to pictures and visual content, when sharing pictures on

 Instagram, I am always a bit conscious about not posting too much because everything goes

 on the main feed. So that is primarily why 

 I like the concept of rooms. I can create a

 dedicated space for sharing pictures and likewise on Twitter too, I am a bit skeptical about

 posting image content and video content or tweets. Everything gets mixed up whereas here,

 things are much more well organized if that 

 makes any sense. So yeah, AirChad rocks. I love

 i am absolutely blown away by this generation
